The Top Cargo Company in Kenya for Importers Who Cannot Afford Surprises
Search for the top cargo company in Kenya and you get a hundred names. What separates them is not the marketing — it is whether the company holds its own KRA customs licence, whether the quote you sign is the invoice you pay, and whether one person stays accountable from your supplier's factory to your shop door.
Bluescale Logistics handles the whole journey: collection at origin, air cargo through JKIA and sea cargo through Mombasa, weekly consolidations out of Guangzhou, Yiwu, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, clearance by our own licensed team, storage on Mombasa Road, and delivery anywhere in Kenya.
This page explains how to rank cargo companies in Kenya against each other, what a proper cargo quote must show you, and exactly what we do at each stage — so you can shortlist on evidence rather than on who ranks first.

What actually makes a cargo company top-tier in Kenya
Start with the licence. A top cargo company clears your goods with its own KRA-licensed, AEO-accredited agents rather than passing the file to a third party you never meet. That single fact is the difference between cargo that clears in days and cargo that sits at the port collecting storage charges while two companies email each other.
Then look at scope. A consolidator gets your goods to Kenya. A clearing agent gets them out of the port. A transporter gets them to your door. Only a full-service cargo company does all three under one contract — and every handover you remove is a place your cargo can no longer stall.
Finally, look at the quote. A single lump-sum figure is the most expensive quote in Kenyan logistics, because everything not itemised becomes a surcharge later. Freight, duty, VAT, IDF, railway development levy, terminal handling, clearance, storage and inland transport should each appear on their own line.
- Own KRA customs agent licence — ask for the number and confirm it
- One contract covering origin collection, freight, clearance, storage and delivery
- Itemised quote separating pass-through costs from the company's own fee
- A named coordinator with a deputy who knows your file
- References from importers moving cargo like yours
Air cargo or sea cargo — choosing by weight, value and urgency
Air cargo through JKIA moves in days and suits anything light, urgent, perishable or valuable: phones and accessories, beauty products, fashion drops, pharmaceuticals, spare parts holding up a production line. You pay more per kilo and less in tied-up capital and lost sales.
Sea cargo through Mombasa is far cheaper per kilo and carries the bulk of what Kenya imports — furniture, building materials, machinery, packaging, bulk stock. Transit is measured in weeks, so it rewards planning. A full container makes sense once your cargo fills roughly half of one; below that, groupage lets you pay only for the space you occupy.
The working rule: heavy relative to value, ship it by sea; light and valuable, or needed last week, fly it. Send us the packing list and we price both so you decide with the numbers in front of you rather than on instinct.
- Air cargo — days in transit for urgent, light, perishable or high-value goods
- Sea FCL — a full 20ft or 40ft container, most economical at volume
- Sea LCL / groupage — shared container space for smaller consignments
- Combined programmes — bulk stock by sea, urgent top-up lines by air
China to Kenya, handled at both ends
China is the biggest origin for Kenyan importers and the place cargo goes wrong most often: a supplier who ships late, a packing list that does not match the invoice, goods that arrive without the certification KEBS requires. Cargo companies that only book freight leave you to manage all of that over WeChat.
We work the origin end. We collect from your supplier, check cartons and quantities against your packing list, consolidate weekly by sea and air, and arrange IDF and PVoC where they apply — before the cargo sails or flies. On arrival we clear at Mombasa, ICD Embakasi or JKIA and deliver to your premises. One company, one quote, one person to call.
- Supplier collection and carton-level checks against your packing list in China
- Weekly sea and air consolidations from the main sourcing hubs
- IDF, PVoC and KEBS compliance arranged before departure
- Clearance at Mombasa, ICD Embakasi or JKIA by our own licensed team
- Delivery to your shop, warehouse or upcountry address
Cargo types we handle, and what each one needs
General and containerised cargo is the everyday work — stock, packaging, furniture, spares. Perishables and pharmaceuticals need cold chain from the aircraft door onward with temperature records you can show a regulator. High-value cargo needs tighter custody, declared-value cover and a delivery plan that does not leave it sitting overnight in a yard.
Project and oversized cargo — machinery, generators, plant, transformers — needs route surveys, abnormal-load permits and lowbed equipment booked well ahead. Dangerous goods need trained handling and correct documentation at both ends. We tell you which category your consignment falls into and what it will require before you commit, not after it lands.
Storage that buys you timing
Landing cargo and selling it are rarely the same week. Our warehousing on Mombasa Road holds cleared cargo and releases it on a schedule you set — so you can land stock when freight rates are low, hold it near Nairobi, and feed it to the market as demand calls instead of financing emergency airfreight when you run out.
Receiving and inspection, palletised storage, inventory reporting, pick-and-pack and scheduled distribution all run from the same site your trucks leave from, which removes the double handling fees that appear when the warehouse and the transporter are different companies.
How to shortlist us against anyone else
Ask three cargo companies for a quote on the same packing list. Compare them line by line, not by headline figure. Ask each for its KRA licence number, which legs it performs in-house, and what happens when a container is flagged for verification — a company that has handled it will describe the process calmly and give a realistic timeline.
Then run one shipment. A trial consignment is the cheapest vetting method that has never lied to anybody, and it is how most of our long-term clients started.
