Shipping Companies in Kenya: Sea Freight Done Right

Almost everything imported into Kenya arrives by sea through the Port of Mombasa — and the difference between a smooth import and an expensive ordeal is the shipping partner you choose. Shipping companies in Kenya range from the global carrier lines that own the vessels to the freight partners who book space, clear cargo and deliver it inland.

Bluescale Logistics sits on the side that works for you: we book your cargo with the right carrier, track the vessel, clear the container at Mombasa or ICD Embakasi with our own KRA-licensed team, and truck it to your premises anywhere in Kenya.

Carrier lines vs freight partners — who does what

The ocean carriers — the household-name shipping lines calling at Mombasa — sell vessel space and move containers between ports. They do not clear your cargo, negotiate your storage, or deliver to your warehouse. That inland half of the journey belongs to a freight and logistics partner.

A good Kenyan freight partner books competitive rates across multiple carriers rather than pushing one line, then manages everything the carrier does not: customs entries, KEBS and KRA compliance, port charges, container deposits, and final delivery. That is the Bluescale model — one contact from booking to your gate.

FCL or LCL: choosing how to ship

Full Container Load (FCL) gives you the whole box — 20ft or 40ft — and makes sense once your cargo fills roughly half of one. Less than Container Load (LCL, or groupage) lets you share a container and pay for the space you use, ideal for smaller consignments and first-time importers.

We run both. For LCL we consolidate at origin and deconsolidate in Nairobi, so small importers get the same port handling and customs care as a full-container client.

What shipping through Mombasa actually involves

Once a vessel docks, the clock starts: free storage days at the port are limited, and delays in documentation turn quickly into demurrage. Our clearing team prepares entries before arrival, lodges them the moment the manifest opens, and has trucks scheduled for release day — the routine that keeps your landed cost where the quote said it would be.
